Dance!
Bethel Street Gallery, Honolulu, Hawaii December 3, 2004 - January 5, 2005
Artist Statement
Ginger Royal
In this figure series, I express the relationship of the mind-body-spirit
within, celebrating movement in all its glory of earthly, sensual and
spiritual origins. Two years ago, I began Beledi, (a belly dancing
series), to explore a theme which resonates the excitement, mystery and
mood in the spirit of that unique dance.
In primarily focusing on motion and the continual transitional feel within
dance, capturing past-present-future simultaneously, I want the viewer to
get caught up in the energy, to hear the music, to anticipate, to feel the
dancers intent and need to express through their vehicle, in a moment when
they are wholly themselves, totally present.
My work is guided by my desire to translate the vibrancy of movement and
passion within the individuals, so I naturally continue to expand avenues
in dance. It is a subject I feel I will not tire of soon. I also get to
indulge my other interests in design, color, texture costuming, and
witnessing live performance. I find solace in translating these passing
moods and sensations to revisit and immediately bring me into the moment.
Quite hedonistic, I know. But I also enjoy that others can be moved by
visiting these same "places", ...or their own, through the visual.
May each representation inspire exuberance and passion in you.
Celebrate life! Be inspired!
"The philosophers soul dwells within his head;
the poets soul dwells within his heart;
the dancers soul abides in all her body."
- Kahlil Gibran
